About
Brazil is internationally famous for its music and one of the best places in the world to listen to Brazilian music is Cultura AM, a public radio station based in São Paulo. (Listen online using Windows Media Player.) Now Cultura AM is Brazil's first collaborative station. On its community website RadarCultura.com.br listeners will interact with one another and Cultura's content team to produce the station's broadcast programs.
The audience participates by choosing music, engaging in discussions about common interests, as well as suggesting and commenting on subjects for news stories and programs. To select music, users will access a database with information about 10,000 songs, all of them from Brazilian artists and performers.
On December 17th at 8 pm local time (10 pm GMT) the station broadcasted its first user generated radio show. For the first three months the collaborative programming will run daily for two hours. This transitional period will allow the team to explore the new online platform and to learn to communicate effectively with the audience. By mid-February 2008 Cultura AM should be 100% collaborative.
Radarcultura.com.br is a socially moderated online forum that uses a technology similar to that of sites like Digg.com and current.com. The community votes on published content and the most popular music is listed on the homepage. However, the user participation goes beyond voting. The users will have the same tools as the content team to suggest ideas for music and news programs. By registering on the site, the user becomes co-editor of the station, accessing all the information published without filters.
